About Te Whaiao
Te Whaiao o Hauora Hinengaro Charitable Trust Board is a registered New Zealand charity devoted to hauora hinengaro - mental wellbeing - through solutions led by tikanga Māori and carried with Christian aroha.
Our story
Te Whaiao was founded by four trustees in September 2021 and registered as a New Zealand charity on 23 March 2022. Our kaupapa, in the words of our trust deed, is:
"To facilitate primarily but not exclusively Māori youth to understand self and self-worth, through the process of Te Whaiao, and to be enabled in successfully contributing to te ao hou."
Charitable purpose · NZ Charities Register CC60142Our home is Aotea, Great Barrier Island - a place where the whenua itself does some of the healing. From Aotea we serve whānau across Aotearoa, working in both te reo Māori and English.

Syd leads Te Whaiao's mahi day to day, carrying the kaupapa kanohi ki te kanohi with whānau from our base on Aotea.

David chairs the board, bringing more than two decades of legal, governance and business experience to the service of the kaupapa.

Kevin is a company director whose professional life is spent standing beside people through their hardest seasons.
Together as one
Much of our mahi happens where healing has always happened - in the wharenui, on the whenua, around shared kai. Wānanga and hui bring whānau together so that no one carries their load alone.
He toa takitini - our strength is the strength of the many. When a community gathers around a person, the shadows lose their power.
Raihi Miraka Tamakatore
The kaupapa of Te Whaiao is driven by the life and example of Raihi Miraka Tamakatore. Her strength, her faith and her care for people continue to guide this Trust in everything it does.
She reminds us who we serve, and why: so that every person who comes to us in darkness might be helped gently toward the light.
